1. Core Beliefs of Ancient Egyptian Religion

● Polytheistic system: Egyptians worshipped hundreds of gods and goddesses, each controlling aspects of nature, society, and the universe.

● Balance and order (Ma’at): the universe was believed to function through Ma’at—truth, justice, and cosmic balance—maintained by both gods and humans.

● Interconnected worlds: the divine world, natural world, and human society were deeply linked, influencing floods, harvests, and political stability.

● Religion in daily life: prayers, amulets, festivals, and household rituals were common, not limited to temples.

2. The Gods and Their Roles

● Ra: the sun god and creator, believed to travel across the sky by day and the underworld by night.

● Osiris: god of the afterlife, resurrection, and judge of the dead, symbolizing rebirth and eternal life.

● Isis: goddess of magic, healing, and motherhood, protector of families and the throne.

● Horus: sky god and symbol of kingship; every pharaoh was considered the living Horus on Earth.

● Anubis: god of mummification and funerary rites, guiding souls safely to judgment.

3. The Afterlife and Judgment

● Eternal life goal: Egyptians believed life continued after death, but only if the soul passed divine judgment.

● Weighing of the heart: the heart was weighed against the feather of Ma’at; a lighter heart meant entry into the afterlife.

● Ammit: a fearsome creature that devoured souls found unworthy, resulting in permanent annihilation.

● Field of Reeds: the ideal afterlife, a perfect version of Egypt where the righteous lived forever.

4. Temples, Priests, and Rituals

● Temples as god’s homes: temples were considered literal houses of the gods, not places for public worship.

● Priestly duties: priests performed daily rituals—washing, dressing, and feeding statues of the gods.

● Festivals: major religious festivals involved public processions, music, food, and offerings.

● Sacred knowledge: rituals followed strict rules to maintain Ma’at and avoid chaos.

● Offerings and sacrifices: food, incense, and symbolic gifts were presented to please the gods and secure their protection.
